UACHS Welcomes State Senator Angela McKnight

State Senator Angela McKnight with Mrs. Rice, Shawn Bruce, and IggyService Learning and Internship Coordinator Mrs. Rice called the state senator’s visit “incredible”:  “She shared her expertise on government, her personal story, and the importance of voting and knowing who represents you.” State Sen. McKnight shared powerful stories of resilience and achievement from African American leaders and activists, encouraging students to recognize their potential to effect change.

The state senator emphasized the importance of staying informed and involved in public service, inspiring students to consider their roles as future leaders and advocates for justice. The senator's visit was an integral part of Political and Public Service Activism Week, a broader initiative to engage students in discussions about history, activism, and civic responsibility, which also featured speakers from the Jersey City Police Activity League and mentorship meetings led by members of Blacks in Law Enforcement Servicing the Community (BLESC), Shawn Bruce, Iggy, Tamika McReynolds, John Robinson, Emmanuel Tejeda, and Officer Gaillard.

The previous week’s theme of Community Engagement and Entrepreneurship featured a Pop-Up Shop on Tuesday, February 11, in the multipurpose room, where several students showcased their creations and connected with the community. UACHS also welcomed representatives from New Jersey City University’s Black Alumni, Administrators, Faculty, Students & Staff Organization (BAAFSSO), who spoke to students about preparing themselves for their futures and finding their paths. The week concluded with a Black History Month staff luncheon on February 14, which featured a delicious array of soul food, including vegan options, prepared by UACHS staff members and Black-owned restaurants.

The school’s month-long celebration will culminate with a Performing Arts Showcase on Thursday, February 28, at 3pm, featuring talented students who will present music, dance, and drama inspired by Black culture and history. The Showcase will feature a dance choreographed and performed by senior Zion Daise-Torres, in honor of Coach C, whose presence and absence have been especially felt throughout the month’s activities. UACHS parents and community members are welcome to attend, but seating is limited and admission is not guaranteed to anyone who does not obtain a ticket in advance.

Mrs. Bassil's winning Black History Month bulletin board

Throughout the month, Mrs. Rice has featured staff, alumni, and community leaders on our school's Instagram (@uachs_generals), sharing their stories and contributions to the community. Students have also participated in a daily trivia contest focused on Black history during morning announcements, while teachers and their homerooms competed in the annual bulletin board contest, which had an all-time high participation rate. Congratulations to science department lead teacher Mrs. Bassil on winning the contest with her beautiful bulletin board!
