Due:

Assignment

Complete the Venn Diagram for:
  • Father Amadi and Father Benedict (we started this in class and if you were listening you should have some page numbers referenced).  What is important is to capture not only the page number, but the first few words of what you will cite).  For example, pg. # 105 "He said..." This will prevent you from spending too much time later looking for textual evidence.
  • Amaka and Kambili
Remember we will continue to add to these as we progress through the novel.

You should take a couple of minutes to highlight the differences and then spend 15 minutes looking for strong and thorough textual evidence to support your differences.

Start practicing coming up with thematic statements when you are completed with the character analysis.

Due:

Assignment

Independent Reading Assignment Purple Hibiscus-Please read pages 98-139 by Monday, November 28th.  A quiz will be given upon your return to school next week on Monday.

Please remember that in order to participate in class discussions/activities, pass quizzes, complete the final exam, and write a powerful thematic essay you will need to have read the book.

As discussed today in class, please make a reading plan for the next five days.  I suggested 8 pages per night or reading most of it tonight to get it out of the way before the holiday.

Please note that the audio version of the book has been removed from You Tube and is no longer available.  You will need to read the novel.

Sincerely,
Mrs. DiRenzi

THREE HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS TONIGHT

1. Please make sure I have your retyped corrected college application essays and the drafts.

2. Also, your baby pictures must be uploaded to rePlay it app.

3. Finally,  I would like for you to jot down three different quotes that you are considering for the yearbook.  I want you to write an insightful explanation of why each quote truly represents who you are as an individual. Remember, years from now your children and grandchildren may go in search of who you were when you were younger. Make sure the quote you select speaks to what you value or what inspires you.

Due:

Assignment

Revised college application essay due on Friday, November 18th.  Please be sure to use MLA Format or I will not accept your essay.

Remember the restated prompt is a must in paragraph one. It says to the reader this is what my entire essay will be dedicated to discussing.

Your first sentence (of every paragraph besides the first) should be your topic sentence. It says to the reader this is what my entire paragraph will be dedicated to discussing.

Remember your intended audience is the admissions officer in a college.

Your story should show how you have evolved into the person you are. This evolution should make the admission's officer want to accept you.

Spell check your paper and check your grammar.

Read your paper aloud to check for run-on sentences.

See me immediately if you do not understand a correction.

Schedule time with me next week if you want to edit your essay for a specified word count requirement.

Thank you,
Mrs. DiRenzi

New York Times articles by Ron Lieber on College Application Essays-You all did a great job highlighting the main idea of each paragraph while reading the informational text by Ron Lieber.  I am attaching it here for your reference.  Please watch the videos as they will reinforce what you learned this week.  I am also including some of his past articles for your reference. I suggest that you watch those video clips as well.  The more informed you are on what makes an essay stand out, the better your essay will likely be.

INDEPENDENT READING QUIZ TOMORROW PURPLE HIBISCUS CHAPTER 2
Please be sure to read up to page 26. I know Mr. G. told you that I would give the quiz today, but I wanted to give you one extra day, so you can be sure to start off strong. Try to use Post-it notes and bullet 3 things that happen on each page. It will help with remembering what was read, and you can review the Post-it notes before walking into my room. Another strategy is to discuss the chapter with someone in your family.  After you have read the chapter, provide them with a brief summary. I reread the chapter today on my way to work and it took about 15-20 minutes.

Sincerely,
Mrs. DiRenzi

Assignment

"A Small Place" by Jamaica Kincaid-Rhetorical Device Worksheet due tomorrow Tuesday, September 20th.

Please be sure to define each rhetorical device listed and then find the number of examples indicated.  Remember you are looking for the best examples of Kincaid's use of rhetorical devices in her informal essay.  You should capture where the device is used and rewrite the sentence it is used in. Finally, be sure to answer the questions in the final column which speak to whether or not the device used to persuade or move you was effective and explain why or why not.

Tomorrow you will have a 10 question multiple choice quiz on "A Small Place" by Jamaica Kincaid which was read and discussed in class last week. You will not use your packet for this portion of the quiz.

After you have submitted the 10 questions, you will be given an open-ended question on "A Small Place" by Jamaica Kincaid which will be used as a diagnostic for open-ended responses. You will be able to use your packet for this. Remember to study your terms relating to colonization (colonization, imperialism, post-colonization, oppression, repression, hybrid, or decolonization) as you will need to use two in your response.
